The artist’s wall visual books reveal new aspects of Chania’s history. Politicians, intellectuals, clergymen, fighters and ordinary people from the town’s past are highlighted by the forms, narratives, actions and consequences brought about by their daily decisions in the final shaping of material and spiritual life in today’s Chania.
Dermatis does not isolate actions; instead he comes up with a synthesis that depicts the displacement they produced when they happened, he clears them of any negative aspect and shows them carrying the exact weight they had when they took place. He depicts history, seen from the point of view of a visual artist as well as of a deeply concerned citizen who suffers along with his fellow citizens of this town.
The exhibition is part of the programme titled ‘XANIaRT 2012 – Visual Art Journeys in the District of Chania’.
