Bell Roads Festival in Thessaloniki

One of the most colorful festivals in Northern Greece, the European Bell Bearing Festival titled “Bell Roads”, will be taking place in Thessaloniki on 1-11 February 2018 for the fifth consecutive time offering visitors the opportunity to join in the festivities.

During this magnificent celebration, Greece’s second biggest city – Thessaloniki – comes alive in an explosion of joyful creativity as several bell-wearing groups from all over Greece and Europe showcase their colorful customs over an eleven day period full of exciting and fanciful events that include reenactments of traditional agricultural bell-ringing rituals as well as more modern ones such as film screenings, shadow theatre plays, photography exhibitions, artistic workshops and live concerts.

As always, most of the action will be focused around the city’s waterfront as on February 11th, 2018 (at 11 am) more than 1.500 traditional bell wearers from all over Greece and Europe take to the streets – dancing in the rhythm of the bells – to celebrate the ancient tradition of bell ringing and drive away the bad spirits in an impressive and vibrant parade that starts at the iconic White Tower and finishes at Aristotelous Square bringing awe, smiles and excitement to everyone attending.

More info about Bell Roads:
The custom of bell ringing originates in ancient times and more specifically in Dionysian celebrations and rituals marking the change of seasons and hoping for the fertility of the land. Similar ceremonies can be found in agricultural societies throughout Europe hoping to cast away evil spirits and bring good fortune, harvest and fertility to their community. Still celebrated in Thessaloniki, guests can enjoy these unique celebrations every February with ancient traditions and modern upgrades that culminate on the final day of the festival with an incredible bell-ringing parade through town while festivalgoers join in and dance in the streets.
