Athens Open Air Film Festival 2018

The 8th edition of Athens Open Air Film Festival (AOAFF) returns to the city this summer and will be organizing free screenings of a wide selection of films between June-August 2018 against the backdrop of some Athens’s most iconic monuments and unexpected locations.

During the festival archaeological sites, museums and central spots of the city, including squares, parks and pedestrian areas, are transformed into a large open air cinema in order to host outdoor screenings of some of the greatest movies in film history.

The 2018 Athens Open Air Film Festival kicks off on June 4th with Clint Eastwood’s critically acclaimed film “The Bridges of Madison” (1995) featuring Meryl Streep in one of her best ever on screen performances. The festival’s opening film will take place at the Byzantine and Christian Museum garden – one of the most beautiful urban spaces in Athens – and is proudly supported by the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

AOAFF 2018 also joins forces with Athens & Epidaurus Festival for the fourth consecutive time and will be featuring a series of screenings at several iconic Athens & Epidaurus Festival venues, such as Athens’s Pireos 260. Moreover, in a rare collaboration between the two festivals the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus will be hosting its first ever film screening on June 30th with the Academy Award nominated cinematic adaptation of Euripides’s tragedy “Electra” by Michael Cacoyiannis (1962).

Additionally, in collaboration with the «Lost Highway of Greek Cinema», this year’s AOAFF will feature a tribute to renowned Greek filmmakers Stavros Tsiolis and Kostas Gavras. The tribute includes a special screening of digitally restored copies of their first films («The Young Runaway, 1968» by S. Tsiolis and «The Sleeping Car Murders, 1965» by K. Gavras), both of which will take place at the beautiful Cine Riveria on June 25th and July 6th respectively.

Finally, the festival continues its long established and successful partnership with the British Council by presenting a tribute to legendary literary adaptations on the big screen. The tribute is titled “Classics Illustrated” and it includes screenings some of the genre’s most well known masterpieces, such as “The Remains of the Day, 1993” by James Ivory, “The Collector, 1965” by William Wyler, “Lord of the Flies, 1963” by Peter Brook and many more.

The festival that runs until August 29th is organized by Cinema Magazine and Athens International Film Festival in association with Athens Municipality’s Culture, Sports and Youth Organisation, OPANDA.
