8th International Mountain Psiloritis Race

With the slogan “Run in Zeus’s steps”, the 8th International Mountain Psiloritis Race takes place on the island of Crete on May 27 and 28, 2017.

The race trail covers the distance that pilgrims of the sacred city of Minoan Knossos used to walk in order to climb Mt. Psiloritis and honour their god, Zeus Cretagenes; the latter, according to Greek mythology, was brought up in the cave of Ideon Andron, an important worship centre and sanctum during the Minoan and Roman times.

Psiloritis Race links the myth with the present inviting runners to follow the ‘traces of history’ on the holy mountain of Zeus Cretagenes. The 35km race will kick off on Nida plateau in Anogeia. It is addressed to experienced runners who have to reach the summit of Mountain Psiloritis (2,456m). The event also includes an 8.5km run race, an 8.5km dynamic walking race and a 2km run race for children.

The 8th International Mountain Psiloritis Race is held under the auspices of the Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Rethymno, the Municipality of Amari and the Municipality of Anogeia.
