A special mountaineering event is to be organised by the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing on Profitis Elias Summit on July 21, 2013, for the celebration of the centenary year of the first ascent on Mt Olympus.

Steeped in legend, Mt Olympus and the area around it are like a magnet for hikers-mountaineers, scholars and lovers of Greek countryside and mythology. Since 1913 more than 150,000 mountaineers from 115 countries around the world have climbed Mt Olympus’ summits.

Celebrations for the centenary year of the first ascent by Christos Kakalos, and the Swiss Frederic Boissonnas and Daniel Boud-Bovy will involve various commemorative events which will be organised by local and national agencies in collaboration with the Hellenic Federation for Mountaineering and Climbing on July 20 & 21 2013; festivities will culminate in the ascent to Profitis Elias Summit.

The events organised by the Hellenic Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing are placed under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism.
