20th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

True to its annual appointment, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (TDF) – one of Europe’s primary showcases for the work of new and emerging filmmakers – returns to Thessaloniki, Greece featuring an anniversary edition that will be taking place on 2-11 March 2018.

For over a week in early March, the 20th anniversary edition of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will be presenting approximately 180 feature and 48 short documentary films by directors from all over the world, including 53 feature and 25 short Greek documentaries. The 20th TDF will also be presenting 8 world premieres, 4 international premieres and 8 European premieres. The festival will also feature a rich parallel events program.

As always, the film screenings will take place at the Olympion complex (Olympion and Pavlos Zannas theatres) located at Aristotelous Square as well as at the Tonia Marketaki, Frida Liappa, Stavros Tornes and John Cassavetes theatres located at the city’s Port. This year, TDF will also host screenings in two additional venues situated in two of Thessaloniki’s suburbs – the “Christos Tsakiris” Cultural Center located at Pavlos Melas Municipality and the Municipal Theatre of Kalamaria “Melina Merkouri” located at Kalamaria Municipality.

In addition to the International Competition section, the new VR/ Virtual Reality competition section and other featured segments, the 20th TDF will also showcase a tribute to the legendary French director Agnes Varda with ten of her most important documentaries as well as a tribute titled “68 Beyond 68” with films about upheavals that emerged in the radical year of 1968. Moreover, the festival will give a carte blanche to American director and actress Sara Driver who will attend the event to present a selection of her favorite films.

Τhe opening film of the 20th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will be the Oscar nominated film “Faces Places” by Agnès Varda & JR (Best Documentary Feature” category).
