Necromantium (Nekiomantio)

An important archaeological site near the village of Mesopotamos. This is the only necromantium in Greece. At the sanctum, which operated from as early as the 8th century B.C., the ancient Greeks believed that they could communicate with the souls of the dead, which were led by the bearers Hermes and Charos to Hades, via the Aherontas river and the Aherousis lake. The main sanctum is surrounded by many ancillary grounds which were used in sacramental ceremonies, which the worshipers never disclosed as a sign of respect towards the gods of the Underworld. Near the necromantium are the remains of the ancient city of Efira.
It is located 41 km NW of Preveza.
