The settlement of Doliani identifies to ancient Fanopi. Fanopi, also known from the cultural heritage (Livius), was the base of Fanoteoi and played an important role during the years of the last Macedonian war. The ancient settlement built inside an 85m high natural fortification right next to Kalamas, between the villages of Aghios Georgios and Geroplatanos, extends over 53 m2. By finishing the construction of the new bridge close to the archeological site, Doliani is now just 2km away from Igoumenitsa-Ioannina national road .
The 1.042 m long double fortification enceinte built in the later classic Hellenistic period is boosted by rectangular towers. This fact combined with the steep slopes on the sides surrounded by Kalamas was the perfect form of defense for the settlement. Phanoti controlled the whole plain area north and south of middle Kalamas. That was the reason why from the 4th century B.C. up to the Ottoman occupation it was constantly inhabited. Witnesses of this diachronism are the findings of the city cemetery and the ruins of buildings on top of the hill.
